Best of VMworld Award - Judges' Choice

Ravello Systems won the “Best of VMworld 2014” Judges Choice award for its ability to run VMware workloads on AWS or Google cloud, along with the automation required for rapid deployment of multi-VM applications. We are thankful for all the appreciation and deeply grateful for the technical love. Since we don’t require any cloud migrations or VM conversions to run VMware VMs on AWS (thanks to our nested virtualization technology), we had some fun giving away t-shirts saying “Migration is for the birds, my VMs are nested”, at the event. Here are just a few of the tweets that made our day - a warm shoutout to all our tweeps!

Huge respect for @ravellosystems They just live demoed deploying a whole CRM system on public cloud in their 10 minute TechTalk

Ravello wins Best of VMworld Award - Judges' Choice

While the public cloud is being adopted quickly, the question has been, how can the vast majority of enterprise applications running on VMware on premises accelerate their development & test by using the public cloud, without having to undergo a full cloud migration? Since virtualized multi-tier applications have many different operating systems and complex L2 networking configurations, its a very interesting challenge to provide the entire application environment with the type of cloud portability, speed and configuration capture advantages that enterprises need today.

Ravello Systems, the industry’s leading nested virtualization vendor, has won the Best of VMworld award at VMworld 2014 because it lets users run complex VMware workloads on any cloud such as AWS or Google without any migrations required. By doing so, it enables the agile approach of spinning up rapid development & test environments, even for complex multi-tier applications which may be running different operating systems such as Windows, Linux or even Solaris on VMware.

To achieve this, Ravello uses full nested virtualization and software defined networking technology, delivered as a Saas. Since nested virtualization creates an additional layer of abstraction and encapsulation on top of existing hypervisors, it is an entirely new technology implementation and provides full security isolation. Interestingly, VMware’s lab manager had some basic functionality for rapid development and testing environments that was much loved by its customers - Ravello is different because its cloud-based yet packs in that familiar lab manager type functionality as well. There are some key benefits in the area of agile development and testing that Ravello brings to multi-tier VMware environments:

  1. Capacity from any cloud: Ravello encapsulates a multi-VM application along with all its networking elements so that the entire VMware or KVM environment can be provisioned as is on AWS or Google without requiring any VM conversions or cloud migrations. This means the development and test environments for production VMware workloads can be running on AWS and still be identical to production.
  2. Rapid deployment: In the world of virtualized multi-tier application environments, it today takes hours or even days to provision and deploy a complete application. Ravello reduces this deployment speed from hours to minutes and also simplifies the process of creating a new environment to just one click or API call.
  3. Configuration capture: Ravello saves a “blueprint” of a virtual multi-tier application which is a snapshot of all the virtual machines along with their networking and storage state. Developers can then self-service deploy as many copies of the application environment as they require for development and testing. They can also integrate with Jenkins to spin up multiple environments from a blueprint and execute all their tests in parallel.

Ravello Systems was founded in 2011 by the team behind the popular KVM hypervisor which is the de facto standard in virtualization in the Linux world today. As our CEO Rami likes to say, “We are big believers in the power of creating a platform and putting maximum flexibility and control in the hands of users. With Ravello’s nested hypervisor and software-defined networking technology we have built the platform that lets entire VMware workloads be rapidly deployed in any public cloud. Its exciting to see customers put our technology to use for creating accelerated development and test environments for complex applications”

Several enterprise customers such as Deutsche Telekom and Mobitor are currently using Ravello to accelerate their development cycles by rapidly creating cloud-based development and test environments for their existing multi tier applications.
