We held our VMware ESXi on Ravello tech chat earlier this week - we will soon update this post with the recording. You can also sign up for our next product tech chat and join us for an interactive discussion with the product team.
Some key questions posed during the tech chat
We are VMware partner company. How can I test my VMware virtual appliance?
Ravello can help TAP partners test their VMware appliance. There are two options -
- Run your appliance on top of ESXi running on Ravello - needed when the appliances need to interface with ESXi for any reason - data replication, networking, security
- Run natively on Ravello - can be used for most appliances that do not need to interface with ESXi.
What are the uses of home lab on Ravello?
People need home labs for variety of reasons - stay current with technology, play with partner products etc. There are three ways to have a home lab using Ravello -
- All components run on Ravello - ESXi nodes, vCenter, Shared storage
- vCenter/vSphere at home and couple of ESXi compute nodes on Ravello
- vCenter & some ESXi compute nodes at home. Additional ESXi nodes needed for burst capacity on Ravello
For scenarios 2 & 3 - two options exist -
- No VPN in the environment - one needs to open certain ports between data center and Ravello
- Set VPN devices on both sides - data center & Ravello
Could you please explain how Ravello’s pricing works?
Ravello's pricing calculator is available at www.ravellosystems.com/pricing. Plug in the total vCPUs, RAM and storage needed across your environment ESXi, vSphere, shared storage NFS onto calculator. Choose networking tier and whether you want to run it as a cost optimized or performance optimized. As an example an environment with 12 vCPUs, 24 GB RAM, 200 GB storage will cost between $0.91 - $1.75/hour.
How do I use use Ravello to study for VMware certification - VCPE?
Ravello is a very convenient tool for building home labs that can be used to practice for VMware certification exams. Best way to study for VMware certification - build out the exercises in the study guide on Ravello based ESXi home lab.
Does Ravello also run OpenStack?
OpenStack runs on Ravello. Ravello can be used to run multiple OpenStack versions (havana, juno etc.) with hardware acceleration. There are multiple OpenStack blueprints available that can be transferred to your account.
